FAQ Question:
I can't play videos.
This is a fairly common problem with the latest
version of Windows Media Player (WMP). You'll want to click here
to make sure you've got the latest version of WMP installed.
Windows 98 Users: Sorry, but Microsoft
has decided you're too slow and old. You're just plain screwed.
They do not support Windows Media Player 9 on Windows 98. Microsoft
is phasing out all support for Windows 98. In short, UPGRADE you
cheap bastard!
If you're on AOL (our condolances...),
you'll also want to disable AOL Media Player and use another Windows
Media Player:
- Click on "Settings" in the AOL
Toolbar
- Choose "Preferences" from the
menu
- Click on the "Multimedia" link
- Uncheck "Use AOL Media Player for supported
file types"
- Click "Save"
- Update to a better ISP and browser (this
one may be optional...)
A note on Video Drivers:
The latest version of WMP also doesn't get along very well with
older versions of Video Drivers. Video Drivers tell your computer
how to communicate with your Video Card. The easiest way to update
your drivers is to head over to Windows
Updates and scan for any updates. Once the scan is
done, look under the Driver Tab to see if it found any newer video
drivers. The good news is that this is easy. The bad news is that
the Windows Updates page often only finds drivers for newer computer
systems. Also, sometimes the drivers Microsoft has for you aren't
really the most recent ones. Really the best way to update your
Video Drivers is to go to the manufacturer's site. But you'll
need to know who that is and what model your have. Here's how:
To update your drivers right click on the My
Computer icon on your desktop and click Properties:

Click on the hardware tab at the top and finally
the Device Manager button:

Now click the "+" sign next to Display
Adapters. You should see something below Display Adapters. Right
click this and click properties:

Click the Driver tab and finally the Update Driver
button:

Now, be warned, it's about a 50/50 shot that
this find a new driver. You may have to find the driver yourself.
The easiest way to find this is to do a search on Google.com.
All you'll need is the type of adapter and the manufacturer. In
the picture above, the Driver Provider is ATI and the type of
device is Mobility M4. So if you searched Google.com for "ATI
Mobility M4 Driver" you'd find ATI's driver support page.
